"It is an eccentric category that is so niche. We think someone connected to the film industry or a lover of cinema will be drawn to it," says John Chancellor, of Matrix Property Group.
Richmond’s legendary Regent Theatre, which is said to have its own phantom, is on the market.
Agents Matrix Property Group, which specialises in selling residential development sites, says the theatre is located in a prominent site at 145 Windsor Street in the centre of town. Richmond is on the outskirts of Sydney. The site is approximately 1,175 square metres.
The Regent has operated for more than 80 years, and according to those who work there, has its own 'phantom', a ghost that lingers in the stairwell, thought to be the ghost of a lady who fell to her death there in the 1930s.
“We expect significant interest in the theatre," said John Chancellor, of Matrix Property Group.
"It is an eccentric category that is so niche. We think someone connected to the film industry or a lover of cinema will be drawn to it," he predicted.
Michael Walsh originally owned The Regent Threatre, which opened in 1935 with a production called 'My Heart is Calling'. His daughters ran the theatre until 1976, when it was sold to television personality Mike Walsh (no relation).
Mike Walsh restored the theatre, and it was used for movie screenings and live presentations. In 1989 it was sold to current owner John Levy.
The property features a two-storey twin cinema in a 1930s art deco/Spanish mission architectural style by Herbert & Wilson. The property is heritage listed.
“While we think a movie buff will buy the theatre, it could also be suited to a diverse range of other uses,” Chancellor said.
