A historic Haymarket facade has been cleverly incorporated into a $300 million contemporary, mixed-use development.
The original Poultry Market building in Haymarket was burnt down in 1985. All that remained was the historic facade. Ausbao, the local subsidiary of Beijing's largest development company, bought the site in 2009. WMK Architects won a design competition to revitalise the derelict site, with The Quay apartments. The project was granted 10% extra floor space by the City of Sydney Council for its clever reactivation of the site's original function, its design merits, and for its environmental initiatives. WMK has retained the facade's former position as a market entrance, and includes 3,411sqm of retail space, including a supermarket, restaurants, and specialty shops, behind the facade. Rising above, but set back from the facade are two apartment towers containing 286 apartments. A communal north-facing terrace garden connects the two towers, and The Quay also has an indoor-outdoor gymnasium. The Quay has achieved a four-star Green Star rating, by cleverly incorporating natural light and ventilation into the design. Since its launch, when the majority of apartments were sold, early buyers have on-sold their apartments, and have enjoyed 30% capital gains.
