As one of Queensland’s best BDMs, Glen shares the biggest lessons he’s learnt over the last decade and what it really takes to succeed in this industry long term.
Ten years as a Business Development Manager with the Coronis Group has taught Glen Evans more than just how to sign new managements, it’s taught him how to build lasting relationships, stay resilient through the highs and lows, and keep showing up with purpose. As one of Queensland’s best BDMs, Glen shares the biggest lessons he’s learnt over the last decade and what it really takes to succeed in this industry long term.
1.The work you do today pays off tomorrow. Your actions today will often be felt months down the track. It can be hard sometimes not getting immediate reward, but you need to keep putting the effort in each day – I guarantee your future self will love you for it.
2. Real estate is a people business. Treat everyone the way you would like to be treated and always try and look at any situation from the client's eyes. Buying investment properties can be exceptionally stressful but also exciting, try and remember that every time you talk to a client and stay in tune with what they’re feeling.
3. Ride the highs and lows- I've learnt that this career can be filled with the highest highs and the lowest lows. Some you can control others you can't, so always focus on the controllables. What actions can you do today to minimise any lows in the future. Make sure when those highs do roll around, celebrate them!
4. Honesty is the best policy- No matter how hard a conversation may be to have with a client, or a co-worker just DO IT! Be honest and empathetic to their point of view. In this role, like any sales role, it's always best to be transparent and forthcoming with all information as it comes to hand. There has been a number of times over the years I've had to deliver bad news. While the client didn't like it at the time, they always appreciated the honesty and thanked me for taking the time to work through it with them.
5. Set clear, achievable and measurable goals- It took me a while to get this one. We all have aspirations of what a 'better life' looks like and what we aspire to. But not many people have an understanding or plan to get there. Real goal setting can help you achieve this utopian future. I've found setting your big life goals is best, then working backwards setting measurable and achievable goals/targets for each year, quarter, month, week and day. All of these little milestones help you get to that ultimate goal and provide many smaller milestones along the way. It is a great way to keep yourself engaged and help you measure how much closer you are to hitting the major goal.
6. Work hard but also recharge- Whether you are starting your career or 10 years in, the work doesn't really change. Business may come easier after all the relationships you have built but helping to achieve our client's property goals is still a full-time role. It's vital to recharge your batteries. Holidays is the obvious one to help with this, but be mindful this can also add more stress with monthly targets and KPIs still needing to be hit.
This one took me the longest time to overcome, and I still struggle from time to time. But just as one of my favourite sayings goes, prior preparation prevents poor performance. Set your holidays in advance and regularly. When you know you have a break coming up, you can prepare well in advance and actually enjoy your time off! Hobbies are another great way to recharge the batteries. I love a round of golf by myself, the 'me' time helps me block out all the distractions from the day to day and help my mental clarity.
7. Find a place you are supported- I got so lucky with this one. Coronis have supported me through the good times and the bad times. I've been blessed to have leaders and colleagues that I can have a real and honest conversations with, who help me to achieve my goals and actually care about what I’m striving for. I find it is crucial to have consistent training, development and an environment that supports and listens to all ideas you may have. I've been offered a number of roles from other agencies over the years, but none have compared to where I am now. So, if you don't have that in where you work.
