Vivien Rendina of Ray White Newcastle Lake Macquarie shares her passions and experiences in the industry.
Over the last few months of growing homelessness within our region, we have been actively assisting Jenny’s Place, a non-profit organisation that houses women and children in need who are escaping domestic violence and homelessness.
From our current available homes, we have been able to provide a good financial range of properties to support this organisation, allowing women to get back on their feet faster and find their independence to live in a more secure and safe environment again.
We feel as though we are making a difference with each family that we are able to relocate from their situation.
I personally came across a lady called Darl who was in the Jenny's Place program. Darl had previously been living down south and found herself in unpleasant situations leading to her homelessness and separation from her children. She had been in Jenny's Place for quite some time and had been working hard to secure ongoing employment. I knew when she had travelled two hours on public transport just to see the place that there was something special about her, and she was the first from this program we assisted.
When Darl had the news of her acceptance she broke down in tears thanking us for all we are doing. It humbled me and reminded me of the good that exists, and that we can be a huge part in helping people in the right direction.
Within a few weeks, this led to us helping another three more women in the Jenny's Place program."
How did you get into the industry?
I was working in hospitality management and was looking for a career change. One of the local real estate principals was a friend of mine, and thought I had what it takes be in property management. I was offered a business development officer position which led to many opportunities and career paths, from commercial property manager, leasing manager, property officer and finally back to a business development manager role, which I love.
What do you love about property management?
I love the problem solving aspect of the job and educating investors to better understand their rights and obligations as a landlord. I find the interaction between the clients most rewarding, and the trust they have in me allows me to know I’m creating a great experience.
The team I work with sometimes changes, but the core is always the same, which is what makes us great. They each bring a sense of passion, commitment and stringency to keep everything working in harmony. I learn something new every day from each of these people about how I can better myself and the clients I come across.
What are your top tips for preventing burnout?
Make time for yourself and breathe. As a mum of two, it's hard to remember myself some days. Self-care starts with booking little appointments here and there in lunch breaks, so I can switch off and focus on me. Eating outside and exercising always keeps my brain at its best, in the most functional state and allows me to optimise my working day. I make sure to reach out to my bosses about my mindset and we devise a plan that works for all of us.
