Scott Hutchinson is the chairman of Hutchinson Builders, Australia’s largest privately owned construction company.

The company employs 1,600 staff, builds over 300 projects annually, and had a $2.4 billion turnover in 2017.

Hutchinson Builders is currently constructing arguably the most exciting new development in Brisbane - the Howard Smith Wharves.

The Howard Smith Wharves are located under the Story Bridge on the Brisbane Wharves, and once completed will include a hotel, brewery, bar, riverside restaurants and green spaces.

While Hutchinson Builders average project value is around $22 million, no job is too big, small, or diverse, from building a friends house to a 90 level building.

The company works across many sectors including commercial, residential high-rise, health, education, retail, and aged care.

Hutchinson Builders is a family owned business spanning five generations and 106 years, and works on projects around the world including Canada and Japan.

Mr Hutchinson told WILLIAMS MEDIA “continuity of culture and management style” is what he enjoys the most about working in a family owned business.

The industry veterans tips for the next generation working at Hutchinsons include “staying alive and not setting profit or turnover targets”.

Mr Hutchinson would also like to see the industry gaining more stability in the next ten years.

The increasing importance of sustainability will have “a good effect on the building industry,” said Mr Hutchinson.  

“Building will be better and more efficient.”

The company has also ventured into beekeeping and established hives on every ‘Hutchies’ office roof, inspired by environmental sustainability.

Although, unfortunately Mr Hutchinson says the honey can’t be purchased, as it is given away to clients and staff!

Mr Hutchinson resides in Kangaroo Point, but told WILLIAMS MEDIA if he could live anywhere in the world, it would be London.
