Adam Piller from Caporn Young Estate Agents has taken out first place in the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia's annual 'Gift of the Gavel' Auctioneering Championships.
Held at REIWA Head Office in Subiaco, the Institute’s Auctioneering Championships saw a selection of Western Australia's best auctioneers battle it out for the 2018 title.
It is the first time Adam Piller has won the competition, he told WILLIAMS MEDIA.
"It felt amazing to win, it is something I am very passionate about and I just grabbed the opportunity with both hands," he said.
"Tom Esze, who was the runner up has actually been instrumental in my training.
"After the competition, I received some feedback from the judges about tweaking my bid calling. I had an auction on Saturday where I put that advice into action, and I definitely noticed a difference in the response of those who were bidding. So it is apparent that these competitions really do help you fine tune your skills," he said.
“This year’s championships showcased the auction talent we have on display here in WA and I’d like to thank all of our participants for their role in helping to lift the profile of auctioneering in WA,” REIWA CEO Neville Pozzi said.
He told WILLIAMS MEDIA the Auctioneering Championships showcased WA’s talent in the auction space.
“While auctions remain a niche segment of the Western Australian sales market, they are becoming increasingly popular with sellers who want their listing to stand out in a very competitive market,” he said.
“Congratulations to Mr Piller on winning the 2018 championship title and setting the standard of excellence in WA for auctioneering. His performance serves as a great benchmark for his colleagues.
“I’d also like to congratulate our runner-up, and last year’s winner, Tom Esze from tomesze.com for his second place achievement and fine performance,” Mr Pozzi said.
Mr Esze was last years' REIWA Auctioneering Champion, beating David Vitale who was runner up.
Mr Esze also won the REIWA's Auctioneering Championship in 2010 and 2015 and was runner up in 2016.

Auctioneering competitions require that competitors take part in a simulated auction. Competitors are delivered intentionally difficult bidding sequences, and are asked complex legal questions. Despite the challenging circumstances, competitors must retain their wit, charm and confidence, and to stick within a strict time limit. The competitions are more challenging than a real-life auction, as every element is designed to test the knowledge, skill and composure of the competitor.
"The competition environment is a large alternative to live auctions out in the field!" Mr Esze told WILLIAMS MEDIA.
"It’s a fantastic opportunity to hone your skill-set as an auctioneer," he said.
In the novice category of the Championships held on 13 June, Prash Nayar from Harcourts Integrity took out top honours for the second year in a row.
Mr Nayar was presented with his award at the senior category championships.
Mr Piller and Mr Esze will both represent REIWA at the 2018 Australasian Auctioneering Championships in Auckland this October.
The winner of the 2017 Australasian Auctioneering Championships was Justin Nickerson and a full list of winners from the previous years can be viewed from here.
