Former PM and investment banker, Sir John Key, has sold his lavish Auckland mansion for nearly $18 million (or NZ$20 million) - but is keeping the basketball and tennis court where he and his wife plan to build a new home.
Sir John Key has sold his Parnell, Auckland, mansion for what is expected to be a record price, but is holding onto the basketball and tennis courts, where he and his wife, Bronagh, plan to build a new home.
Key, who was New Zealand's prime minister between 2008 and 2016, sold the sprawling estate to a buyer in China last month. The purchased land will include the six-bedroom mansion, in-ground swimming pool, and pool house.
The Keys will retain a 650sqm block, and are expected to build a two-storey home on the site.
The median price of a home in Parnell was $1,626,300 as of June, according to qv.co.nz data published in a recent NZ Herald Property Report.
According to the data, Parnell prices have risen 48 percent since June 2014.
The most expensive house in Parnell prior to the sale was a property at 141 St Stephens Avenue, which sold for just under $9 million (or just over NZ$10 million) in 2015.
