In his first official auction, Michael Garofolo won heat one of this year's REINSW Novice Auctioneers Competition.
In only his first official auction, Michael Garofolo won the first heat of the REINSW's Novice Auctioneers Competition.
The first of ten NAC heats took place at Cooley Auctions in Double Bay on Monday 20 March, and saw five auctioneers sell an item of their choice in front of a panel of judges.
The contestants helped to raise a total of $1,790 with all of the proceeds going to the breast cancer support and eduction charity, the McGrath Foundation.
Items auctioned on the night included a whale-watching tour, breakfast at Bondi Icebergs, and a whole free-range Cowra lamb.
Garofolo won with his pitch to sell dinner for two at Ottimo Italian Kitchen in Hunters Hill, with a bottle of Penfolds 2010 St Henri Shiraz. He achieved a final sale price of $350.
Having won in the first heat, Garofolo will now progress to the NAC State Final in Sydney.
Garofolo, who currently works in his family restaurant, said, “I was nervous before the auction and was not expecting to win, so I was excited when I found out and am really looking forward to the final."
The NAC gives those considering a career as an auctioneer a chance to try out their skills without the pressure of selling a property.
“I want to become a full-time auctioneer and saw entering the NAC as the logical first step to get there," said Garofolo.
The overall winner will receive $1,000, and will conduct a charity auction at the REINSW Women in Real Estate Conference. They will also receive two complimentary tickets to the REINSW Awards for Excellence gala dinner.
Previous winners and finalists have gone on to have successful careers as auctioneers, including Damien Cooley of Cooley Auctions and Jesse Davidson of auctionWORKS.
