LUXURY LIST WEEKEND spoke to G-SEC Security Executive Director Callum Scollay about the security business.

What was the inspiration to start G-SEC Security 10 years ago?

G-SEC Security evolved organically. I started in the security industry as a doorman and as a good communicator who could problem solve or diffuse situations quickly, I was pretty good at it. I then met others within the industry who introduced me to alarm system installation and response. 

It was clear that the industry was too segmented, there were no business models providing all security related services. If you wanted guards you would call Wilsons Security, if you wanted an alarm system you would call ADT, or if you wanted anything fire related you called CHUBB. I met business owners who wanted all services without having to subcontract on subcontractor etc. So that’s what we did.

My parents have had a close and ongoing relationship with Kay & Burton for years.

What makes G-SEC Security different and more appropriate for luxury property owners?

We provide comprehensive security and peace of mind. We install or supply commercial grade equipment, monitored by our A1 graded control room and alarms are responded to by our highly trained patrol officers who have been carrying firearms, batons and handcuffs for the past 15 years. We tailor our service to each client's specifications and requirements. . 

We have learned that Kay & Burton clients with busy lives simply want a service that takes on the responsibility of providing security without requiring them to be constantly making decisions. We provide free alarm response to our monitored clients, in the event of an alarm triggering we immediately dispatch our closest mobile patrol without calling the client. The patrol officer will inspect the site, report findings and the incident is logged in the event of a false alarm - all without disturbing the client.

What is the most popular service requested by owners of high-end homes?

One of the most requested services is security patrols for premises. As borders open and families take the opportunity to travel this exposes the risk of a vacant property. Our clients want to know their property is secure without inconveniencing family and friends to continually check. We perform daily patrols, send weekly reports, generally hold keys in the event we need to gain or grant access to provide a client service that takes distraction or concern away.

Has this changed over the last 10 years?

The technology available has developed in leaps and bounds including automation that learns patterns and behaviours of the client to better predict what they need and thermal imaging cameras and detailed analytics that can read all of a person’s features right down to their demeanour. 

One point has remained a constant: the response. The greatest technology in the world can tell you what is happening, but who is responding to it? We pride ourselves in our patrol officers and fleet, who enable us to provide both sides of a client’s security needs at the highest level.

What is the most unusual or interesting brief you’ve been given?

We had a client who was an avid literary work collector and scholar with a collection of printed pieces of work that were one of a kind and exceptionally old. The client viewed themselves as custodians and wanted to take every possible measure to protect these works not only from theft, but fire, water or even long term oxidisation.

Combined with insurance requirements we had to have some interesting technology, we worked with their insurance company, providing very detailed plans to ensure the brief was met. Although there needed to be fire suppression systems, it could not be anything that would further damage the literature, so no water or powder based suppressants and the response had to be immediate.

Did you take it on?

Yes we found the technology, a clean agent gas that is flooded into the space to suppress the fire combined with fire detection cameras, thermal sensors and a host of other technology.

Do you have a funny story from the field?

We had an alarm activate at a burger bar in the city early one morning. Due to the number of activations two patrol units were sent who arrived on scene shortly thereafter. As we hold keys to most clients’ premises our officers entered and were immediately confronted with a grown, naked man, covered in oil with a terrible odour.

The radio transmission from the guards to our control room was exceptionally funny, I think our dispatcher made them repeat it 3 times out of disbelief. The burglar had forced entry through the roof, fallen into the kitchen area and pushed over a vat of used cooking oil so decided to remove all his clothes, however he was still saturated. Entering through the roof with all exterior doors locked he was effectively trapped within the building, naked and covered in oil. Per the attending officers, there was a look of resigned relief in his eyes when they opened the door. He was compliant and arrested.

What do you enjoy in your down-time?

I am a foodie for sure. We live on the edge of the Yarra Valley with some of the best food and wine available at our fingertips. I am pretty close with my brothers-in-law, so we generally are always trying to get out over a weekend and find some hidden gem that no one had found before to gain bragging rights. We have found some absolute hidden treasures.
