Having grown up in South Africa and lived for many years in Portugal, Leonard Teplin has a keen appreciation for the diversity of inner-Melbourne communities and housing styles.

Teplin, director of projects with Marshall White, has been involved in some of Melbourne's most iconic developments.

How did you get your start in the property business?

15 years ago my father recommended I meet someone for some career advice. That man happened to be a real estate agent. From that day on, I caught the bug and have never looked back.

Have you always worked in this industry, or did you do something else previously?

My first job out of high school was in real estate, and ever since I have dedicated myself to a career in this industry.

What do you love about your job?

At first it was the ability to have a hands-on approach that interested me; I wanted to be involved with the design, from the look and feel of the outside, right through to what was on the inside.

Now, I’m lucky enough to work collaboratively with clients to create the perfect building based upon our list of must haves, and then have the opportunity to see these projects through by taking them to market.

What's your advice to a young person looking at getting into the same work?

Start at the bottom and work with an experienced team that you can learn from. Take the time to build yourself and your skills from the ground up. The job should be about learning everything you can; soaking it up – not the money! Money will come later…

What would you like to see change in the industry? Is there anything which you'd like to see done differently?

I see the industry becoming far more sophisticated and much more expensive. I think we will start to see world famous architects, designers and developers bring new accommodation and technology standards to Melbourne and Australia, which is an exciting prospect with widespread potential for each and every one of us in this sector.

I think this is the type of change we need to see if we are to elevate our industry’s reputation for quality, innovation and design on the world stage.

Where do you live now, and what's your dream home?

I currently live in Albert Park, but my dream home is a beautiful grand heritage façade with a modern extension and pool in Middle Park.
