Anna Davey is an investment manager at Di Jones Real Estate in Sydney.
How did you start in the real estate business? Have you always worked in this industry or did you do something else previously?
I started working in real estate back in 2010 for a local stock and station agent in my home town of Geelong. I fell in love with the industry straight away. Ironically, I had sworn when leaving school, that I wouldn’t be one of those people who just ended up in real estate.
However, after going to university to study accounting, I quickly discovered this was not my passion. I have always been interested in property, my parents have built and renovated numerous homes and have always had investment properties. My Sundays were often spent driving around with my family looking at display homes and properties for sale to get ideas for the properties we were building. I still to this day really enjoy perusing properties on domain and realestate.com.au.
What do you love about your job?
I love the diversity that it brings. No two days are ever the same. I get to deal with people from all different walks of life and you learn some pretty interesting things about people's lives. It’s a great way to meet new people.
Is real estate a good profession for women?
I feel that real estate has fast become an industry where women are excelling and are provided with equal opportunities to succeed. We all support each other and it’s a pleasant and nice environment at Di Jones Real Estate.
What would you like to see done differently in the real estate industry?
I know it is probably wishful thinking, but I would love to see federal legislation implemented instead of having state legislation and regulations. It would be easier for both the consumer and industry professionals if the industry was the same no matter what state you were buying, selling or renting in. It can be difficult if you are relocating to get up to date with the differences between the state legislations.
What’s your advice to a young person thinking of entering the real estate profession?
Do it. I was sceptical and worried about the negative perceptions of the industry and the people who worked in it. I was concerned about what people would think of me. However, I was not thinking of all the benefits that would make it such a satisfying career. It’s truly amazing the amount of trust people have in letting you manage their investments or sell their million dollar plus property. It is a privilege to be able to share in one of the most exciting and important moments in people’s lives.
Where do you live now?
I am currently living in Centennial Park. I’ve only been in Sydney for a short time but I have completely fallen in love. I may be a little biased but I have been so lucky moving into, what I believe, is the best part of Sydney (Easter Suburbs) which offers such a great lifestyle.
What’s your dream home, anywhere in the world?
I don’t think I have seen enough of the world yet to lock it in that answer but I do love anywhere near the water. I recently went down to Huskisson (Jervis Bay), such a beautiful place, I could see myself living there.
