As many of us pack up and head out of town for the holidays, the City of Sydney has released a list of tips to help residents secure their home from opportunistic crime. 

The Safe City team has created a list of ways residents can secure their homes

• Always lock up, whether you're stepping out for a few minutes or going away for weeks
• Keep valuables out of sight
• Dispose of packaging discreetly
• Lock your garage, garden shed and other storage areas
• Ask your neighbour to keep an eye on your property
• Ask your neighbour to park their car in your driveway
• Make the home looks lived in – mow your lawns, put your lights on timers, and ask a neighbour to collect your mail
• Avoid packing your car too early, or in view of possible thieves
• Ensure you have adequate home insurance and that it's up to date
• Leave your contact details and destination information with a trusted person
• Fit security doors
• Activate your alarm

“The risk of theft often increases over the holiday period," warned Lord Mayor Clover Moore. 

NSW Police Corporate Spokesperson on Crime Prevention, Chief Superintendent Brad Shepherd, said taking a few simple steps can avoid heartache. 

“Your home is the place where you and your family can enjoy safety and security, and you can ensure this by taking a few simple steps that lower the risk of having a break-in,” he said.
