Set on the ridge above Newport's iconic Little Reef on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this luxurious coastal home was transformed from its original 1970s red brick into a residence of remarkable dimension and warmth by architect Richard Cole.

The home was completed in 2015, revealing a flowing open floorplan and separate studio and recreational spaces, including mosaic-tiled pool, that terrace down the hill, basking in views across Bungan Beach.

Architect Richard Cole told WILLIAMS MEDIA, “The aim of this project was to transform a 1975 red brick box on a spectacular site into a beautiful coastal dwelling which strives to harbour the everyday experiences, aspirations and interactions of a family. As much of the existing house as possible was retained, including the basic form, but the fabric was manipulated and altered to create a series of terraced places from which the inhabitants can engage with the site.” 

Every corner of the site has been carefully considered, utilised and integrated with the fabric and spaces of the building. Interiors have been constructed to be relaxed, warm and yet robust enough to cope with the demands of a young family.

The building is extremely energy efficient and sustainable, utilising solar passive design, LED lighting, natural ventilation, a solar powered hydronic heating system and photovoltaic solar panels.

Cole told WILLIAMS MEDIA that responding to the home’s exposure was an important design parameter, enabling inhabitants to respond to the current conditions. “The site opens to both the north east over Newport’s Little Reef, and south west towards Bungan Beach. With large banks of operable sliding doors and windows, the design opens the living areas to both these aspects, extending living spaces out into the topography, creating sheltered places of prospect.”
