The Real Estate Institute Industry of Australia has announced Beyond the Bricks, a three phase plan involving the whole industry, to help those devastated by the Australian bushfires.
To date the Australian bushfires of the 2019-2020 period have destroyed over 2,200 homes, burnt out 10.7 million hectares of land and killed 29 people.
Such drastic results has initiated determined action from the real estate industry with the Real Estate Institute of Australia, yesterday, sending out a release of an industry-wide response to help those affected by the devastation caused by the bushfires.
“In only a few days nearly thirty major franchise groups and the Real Estate Institutes (REIs) around Australia have pledged nearly $900k to assist those suffering loss and disruption across Australia from unprecedented bushfires,” said Adrian Kelly, President of the REIA.
“Not only is there the immediate loss of property and livelihoods but ongoing damage to communities.
“REIA has combined with the state and territory REIs and franchise groups in putting together a comprehensive plan for the real estate industry to provide immediate financial assistance plus longer term support for these communities.”
Mr Kelly said the initiative is called Beyond the Bricks which encapsulates a three phase plan that provides not only assistance during the crisis, but the aftermath in the communities most affected.
“There is no set approach to fund raising with individual groups determining their own fundraising plan with monies raised to be forwarded through the website www.beyondthebricks.com.au," said Mr Kelly.
“I am confident the industry will raise several millions of dollars when others get behind this initiative over coming weeks to assist the individuals and communities affected."
The Housing Industry Association has also welcomed the Victorian Government's steps to provide tax relief for those people who have been directly impacted by the tragic
bushfires sweeping the state,
The second hardest hit state with 300 homes lost, the Victorian Government has stepped in to provide businesses, families, and individuals whose properties have been destroyed or substantially damaged by bushfires will receive ex-gratia relief for their 2020 land tax assessment.
Land tax will be also be waived on eligible properties being used to provide free accommodation for people who need it.
“HIA fully supports the Victorian Government getting behind those who have been displaced in this bushfire emergency," said HIA Victorian Executive Director Fiona Nield.
“Taxes such as stamp duty, and land tax, are a major impediment to people buying or building a home and by significantly reducing these fees people will hopefully be able to return to a new house sooner and get their lives back on track with as little angst as is possible.
“HIA connected with Bushfire Recovery Victoria last week and we look forward to working closely with the government over the coming weeks and months to ensure a smooth transition can be made by the hundreds of affected families. "
