Whether it’s a redundancy, new management or workplace culture, Iconic Recruit Associate Director Emma Mackay shares advice on how to deal with a high level of stress and anxiety that may occur during this period.
The first thing to do is to note what is making you stressed, explains Iconic Recruit Associate Director Emma Mackay. Then list 10 things you are grateful for that contradict what you are stressing about. For example, I’m stress about not having a job. I’m grateful for this period of navigating exactly what I want and so on.
It is also important to remind yourself that feeling different emotions in this period is normal, it will pass, but it is a normal part of change management, you’re supposed to experience this, we’re not robots.
Exercise while listening to upbeat music. These days you can search for a genre or playlist but keep it upbeat, positive and happy.
Reduce caffeine, alcohol, and junk food intake. Fuel your body with nutrients which give our body vitamins such as Zinc and magnesium which are very good for stress levels.

Vent to the right people – this is important, it is okay to vent, but not to people who are going to be negative. Speak to positive people that look at your situation through positive lenses.
Meet recruitment agents that specialise in your space, and only choose to partner with genuine, caring and transparent recruiters. You get a good gut feeling for a reason – go with that. There are so many agencies so be strict with who you partner with.
Watch a comedy before bed. This is simple and instant. Make sure you choose a show where you laugh out loud, it could be a favourite comedy serious. I choose The Inbetweeners or Seinfeld.
Lavender oil just under your nose – yes, sounds a little nuts but it does work for a quick fix.
Meet an experienced CV writer, career coach or recruiter and explain you are in between jobs, not having much luck and would like some advice or feedback on CV or interviewing.
Develop an action plan; list the roles and companies you would like to work for, and not only email them your details but introduce yourself over the phone.
Keep going, keep applying and directly ask for feedback via a phone call.
