The new terminal will allow larger and a greater number of cruise ships into Newcastle, providing a boost to the local economy.
The NSW Government and Port of Newcastle have revealed the design of the new $12.7 million Newcastle Cruise Terminal, which is expected to transform passenger cruising in Newcastle.
The brand new 3,000sqm purpose-built facility will enable the port to receive a greater number of cruise ships, and larger ships.
The new design, by GHD Woodhead, puts the traveller experience at its core, focusing on maximising the harbour views, ease of movement around the facility, use of natural daylight, and generous open spaces.
The new terminal will include passenger drop-off and pick up areas, coach parking and vessel provisioning facilities.
Port of Newcastle's CEO, Geoff Crowe, said the Newcastle Cruise Terminal will provide an excellent transit experience for passengers arriving in Newcastle, create a positive first impression of the city.
The design "reflects Newcastle's position as a world-class cruise ship destination", he said.
"It will position Newcastle as a home port where ships can start and finish their destination in Newcastle," he said.
"According to the Australian Cruise Association's estimates, cruise shipping in Newcastle currently injects around $11 million per annum to the local economy," said Crowe.
"'Homeporting' has the potential to deliver even more economic value to the region," he said.
Construction will commence in early 2018 and is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
"We look forward to welcoming the Explorer of the Seas on her maiden visit to Newcastle in February 2019 - the largest cruise ship to visit our port carrying 3,900 passengers," said Crowe.
The new terminal is being funded by the NSW Government's Restart NSW Hunter Infrastructure Investment Fund.
