Ikea lovers can heave a collective sigh of relief.
No longer will buying budget home essentials - my personal favourites are the Anaboda wardrobe and the Bekvam footstool - mean a trip to Sydney's outer suburbs and navigating the famously distracting stores.
Ikea will launch an online presence in Australia by the end of the year.
The Swedish home furnishing retailer will experiment with different fulfillment modes, including opening small pick-up point stores, that will offer a select range of Ikea products.
Ikea operates in 28 countries around the world, but only has an online presence in 13 of those countries. The company, usually known for its progressive policies, has been somewhat of a laggard in the online space.
Ikea's managing director, David Hood, said the online store could become the biggest Ikea store in Australia.
A $155 million 70,000sqm distribution centre will be pivotal to Ikea's online plans. The centre is expected to be completed early next year.
The question is, will it stop unplanned purchases triggered by the store's maze-like format? I doubt it. I for one know it's still possible to make impulse buys online.
