Architects Elenberg Fraser design a curvaceous skyscraper for Melbourne.
Melbourne architects Elenberg Fraser have the eyes of the world on their curvaceous Beyonce-inspired building. The firm has received global media attention this week for the design of their Premiere Tower at 134 Spencer Street in Melbourne, which has been designed to resemble the undulating fabric-wrapped bodies of dancers in Beyonce's 'Ghost' music video.
"For those more on the art than science side, we will reveal that the form does pay homage to something more aesthetic – we're going to trust you've seen the music video for Beyoncé's Ghost," said the firm, which used parametric modelling, a type of computer aided design that allows complex shapes to be created in response to data constraints like wind. "This project is the culmination of our significant research. The complex form – a vertical cantilever – is actually the most effective way to redistribute the building's mass, giving the best results in terms of structural dispersion, frequency oscillation and wind requirements."
The 226 metre high, 68 storey structure will contain 660 apartments and a 160-room hotel. It was approved by planning officials in May. The project is backed by Fragrance Group, the property development arm of Singapore real estate tycoon Koh Wee Meng.
