Details of the Melbourne Metro Rail project revealed.
With a rapidly growing population and more high-density apartments being built in the inner city, Melbourne's transport system is a key component of the city's future liveability. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan today announced details of the two rail tunnels that will run through the Melbourne CBD as part of the Melbourne Metro Rail project.
The Melbourne Metro Rail Authority, established in February, has determined the most appropriate route and depth for the nine-kilometre twin tunnels. They concluded that building them underneath Swanston St is the most convenient location for commuters and the most cost-effective option for construction. If the tunnel was beneath Russell St, it wouldn’t allow passengers to transfer directly between the City Loop and the new tunnels. Elizabeth St was also not suitable because of unstable ground conditions and significant and costly engineering challenges. “Aligning Melbourne Metro with Swanston St is better for passengers and for taxpayers,' said Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews.
The tunnel will be built above the City Loop at a depth of around 10 metres, instead of below the City Loop at more than 40 metres. Melbourne Metro will create five new underground stations to be located at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.
The news comes a day after the Labor Government announced it had reached a good faith agreement with the East West Link consortium where no compensation will be paid.
