Any person who has lived with children in a high-rise building will know the fear associated with open windows.

The new rules apply to openable windows 2 metres or more above the ground outside, and less than 1.7m above the floor inside.

The devices must:
Window frames or robust bars that meet with the above requirements comply.
As well as in individual apartments, safety devices must be installed on windows in building common access, such as lobbies and stair wells.
Owners corporations who do not comply could face fines, according to Fair Trading. Owners corporations are not required to monitor or enforce the use of window safety devices, but must ensure they are installed by the 13 March deadline.
Read the NSW government's Fair Trading information page about the new rules.
