Crystalbrook Collection has revealed plans for a $200 million redevelopment of Port Douglas marina to be designed by Aussie architecture firm, SJB.
Crystalbrook Collection, the tourism company owned by Syrian billionaire Ghassan Aboud, has revealed plans for a $200 million redevelopment of Port Douglas marina.
To be called The Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina, the redevelopment will completely overhaul the site. Restaurants, a five-star hotel, apartments and villas, a retail precinct, and pedestrian gardens will feature world-class design targeted at both local and international markets.
Australian architecture firm SJB will design the new marina, taking its inspiration from nature and anchoring the development in its Port Douglas location. “The designs for ‘Superyacht Marina’ are inspired by the reef’s ecosystem,” said SJB director, Tristan Wong.
SJB intends the development to be "an internationally recognisable architectural landmark", said Wong.
New food and beverage premises, including a cocktail lounge, will form a ‘gateway’ to the site along the marina waterfront, providing an exciting new offering for guests and residents of the marina development.
The world-class hotel will offer the highest level of accommodation and amenity, and will feature "clearly distinctive" architecture that is "aesthetically connected to the environment and immediate context".
"Sustainability, in terms of building longevity as well as environmental response, is a key element of the design," said Wong. "The ethos of the development is ‘responsible luxury’", he said.
The site will be pedestrianised, with all parking moved underground, allowing visitors to walk easily around the extensive gardens, boardwalks, and tree-lined paths that surround the marina, hotel, and villas.
Aboud, who was born in Syria but moved to the United Arab Emirates in 1992, acquired the site last year. He has acquired a suite of tourism assets in the region, including three Cairns hotels, outback experience Crystalbrook Lodge and the 33,000-hectare property adjacent to it, and a 90-foot superyacht - MV Bahama - which is available for charter. Aboud owns The Ghassan Aboud Group, which operates a range of businesses in the Middle East, ranging from automotive businesses to media operations.
