A look inside the celebrity's 26-acre horse ranch just north of Los Angeles.
Talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres has shared her passion for interior design in her new book, 'Home.' DeGeneres and partner Portia de Rossi own multiple properties, including a 26-acre horse ranch just north of Los Angeles, which are featured in the book alongside her tips for achieving a similar design aesthetic.
DeGeneres says the property had a pretty incredible past. "It was built by William Powell in the '20s as an estate — it then became a monastery, then a rehab center, and then the horses moved in (much to Portia's delight). It was an incredible piece of property, with eight individual cabins, several barns, and of course, horse stables. There were also these magnificent, giant boulders scattered about. The whole place looked like it belonged on another planet," she says. Parts of the film 'Seabiscuit' were filmed there.
When they bought the property, it was neglected, but the couple has since restored and renovated it. One of the barns has been turned into a dining room for bigger parties.
Some of DeGeneres' design tips include framing your children's art to make a nice statement. She says that any kind of art can make a great impression when grouped properly on a wall, and "an eccentric display can really add personality to your home. She also recommends keeping collections of things (rocks, glass etc) grouped in a way that allows for some free space around them. That way the focus is on the collection and not the clutter."
