Construction industry urges governments to take action on Building Certifier Insurance
Construction industry leaders met in Canberra on Wednesday to urge the Federal, State and Territory Governments to act now to address the building certifier insurance crisis that has potential to bring building and construction activity to a halt.
"We’re putting a stop to dangerous combustible cladding being used on Victorian buildings. This has been allowed to go on for too long and we’re ending it," said Victoria's minister for planning, Richard Wynne.
The Property Council supports proposals for systematic auditing of existing buildings with cladding, and a ban on the future importation and sale of 100% polyethylene core aluminium composite panels.
Master Builders and its 33,000 members want the community to have faith in the safety of our buildings, says Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia.
Dozens of government agencies and all major property companies are working together to improve fire safety standards and deal with non-conforming building products.
As reports begin to emerge that external cladding caused the London fire to spread so quickly, many in Australia are beginning to ask could the same thing happen here?
