'Vailele', circa 1892, is a historic waterfront estate in Woolwich and is for sale by Ken Jacobs of Christie's International Real Estate.
Vailele is an example of Sydney's late 19th-century sandstone architecture. The estate once hosted Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson as its guest, who lived out several of his later years in the garden cottage. Vailele also featured in the TV miniseries 'Return to Eden' in 1983.
Agent, Ken Jacobs, told SCHWARTZWILLIAMS, "The natural attributes of the waterfront location are a given but no matter what angle you view the house from, it is visually beguiling. Of equal appeal is the seamless blend of classic and modern inside the home.
"Vailele is a generational holding that has enjoyed preeminent architectural prominence and coveted location in Hunters Hill and Woolwich since 1892 which is reflected in the fact that it has maintained a certain mystique over its 125 year history."
The house is set in a protected peninsula facing due-north across expansive water views. A private jetty and pontoon can accommodate a 65 foot cruiser.
There are six bedrooms, including a master suite with a dressing room, balcony and spa ensuite. The seven bathrooms in the house have heated bathroom floors.
The living areas include formal lounge and dining rooms, study, music room, cedar-paneled billiard room with professional overhead lighting and a bar. There is also a custom-designed home theatre, temperature-controlled wine room and wet bar.
A contemporary addition to the home is a Calcatta marble kitchen and informal living zone surrounded by glass.
Outside are park-like grounds with a heated pool and spa, entertaining terraces, wide balconies, a cabana with full kitchen, gazebo, heritage well, level lawns, heritage palms and children's cubby house.
A two-bedroom guest cottage has a country kitchen and gas fire. 10-car garage with storage rooms and lift access

The property is 20 minutes from the CBD, and a 250 metre walk to the Woolwich Pier Hotel and the ferry to Circular Quay.
