The contemporary aesthetic of 94 Sugarloaf Crescent Castlecrag for sale by Rick Woodward and Sophia Wiseman of The Agency is complimented by the restoration and preservation of its surrounding environment.
Sculpted into the sandstone escarpment, this Castlecrag residence captures northerly panoramas across the bushland canopy and toward Sugarloaf Creek and Middle Harbour beyond.
The home was designed by local architect Ellen Woolley and exhibits a commitment to its environment, topography, and the economies of solar passive design.

Source: The AgencySpeaking to LUXURY LIST WEEKEND, Ellen Woolley said the design aims to revere the site, while dealing with the constraints of its position on a 4.5 metre plateau between two roughly 3-metre cliffs.
“The site itself is remarkable, there is an extraordinary angophora tree in the heart of the backyard that is ancient. And far more ancient is the 250 million year old bedrock earth in the middle of the site. Along with the material selection being raw and elemental and enduring, it makes for a very tranquil home.”
Within the design, different rooms relate differently to the bush, Ellen explained.
“The kitchen and dining area is like a perch suspended above the canopy that reaches right out into the bushland above the neighbourhood. The living room does almost the opposite while still connecting with the bush. It becomes a verandah because the doors all slide back and you’re left with the verandah rails, so you can in both ways have a very private connection with the bush, but they are quite different.”

“The stair itself is trying to do a number of things at once,” Ellen told LUXURY LIST WEEKEND. “When you move through it, you’re engaging in the theatre of the home. It’s quite theatrical and celebratory. As you move through the house you get more of that sense of retreat and calmness.”

Interiors feature concrete slab walls and floors, combined with Blackbutt detailing and mixed hardwood floors, while a green roof offers not only an outdoor entertaining area with superb outlook, but also insulation and thermal mass.
