The original house was built by Thomas Anstey in 1824 near Oatlands in central Tasmania; however, by 1979 had fallen into disrepair. It was purchased by the current owner, dismantled, and the convict hewn sandstone blocks were transported to the new site at Kettering. Over two years from 1993 to 1995, the new 'Anstey Barton' was built, based on the style of Secheron House built in 1831 in Battery Point with its extensive verandahs over-looking the Derwent River.
