The hotel's heritage
The Heritage Council of Western Australian granted Permanent Entry Status to Moran’s Wagin Hotel on 27 February 2004.
A Memorial has been lodged on the Titles.
This Memorial was registered on 25 November 2003.
The Permanent Entry Status allows the property to be eligible for Government grants to assist in the restoration and preservation of the building.
The original hotel was built by James Spratt in 1889, which he demolished to build the two-storey structure that stands today.
The new hotel was built circa 1900 - 1904.
The building is listed on the West Australian State Heritage Register of heritage places and has been adopted in the Shire of Wagin Municipal Inventory.
The heritage statement notes that the building is an excellent example of a two storey, Federation Filigree style, tuckpointed stone building, in keeping with the Australian pub tradition.
The hotel property has historic value as the first hotel site in Wagin.
The place is a demonstration of the development that occurred in Wagin around the turn-of-the-century as it became the service centre of the district.
It has historic value for its association with James Moran and the Moran Family who are believed to have held a licence for a single hotel for the longest period in Australia from 1921 until 2017 (96 years).
The Moran family continued to run the hotel from 1967 when James Moran passed until it closed in 2017.
