"The location in a well established tall eucalyptus forest generated the key ideas for the concept of the house as a sheltered, narrow escarpment with a gently curved lightweight butterfly roof. This idea established both a secure platform for living with easy flow for people and ventilation between inside and outside," Shane explained.

"The uplifting edges of the roof, with natural plywood ceiling, expand the views into the sheltering tree canopies and ensure a visceral connection to natural beauty and life outside. The house is very energy efficient, with an exterior of all natural materials requiring little maintenance and excellent cross ventilation."

"Interiors are defined by a selective palette and attention to detail, soft white concrete blocks with a white flush mortar finish with red jarrah and light gold, local hoop pine timbers. The house is incredibly private, yet opens up and embraces the bushland and views."

Shane’s vision comes to life with generous living areas strung along a north-facing platform, while the butterfly roof evokes a sense of living under a timber parasol.
