Sold by Deborah Cullen and Richard Sholl of Knight Frank Prestige Residential Sales who turned a private inspection into a bewitching family day trip amid covid-19 restrictions.
Set among leafy ornamental gardens in the Southern Highlands village of Burradoo, this elegant English style country house has been sold by Deborah Cullen and Richard Sholl of Knight Frank Prestige Residential Sales.
Originally designed by renowned Sydney Architects Esplin and Mould, the historic home was built in 1927 and has been stunningly restored with modern and contemporary services and finishes, with interiors refreshed by the award-winning Coco Republic interior design team.
Grand period features remain, including the coffered, pressed metal and plaster ceilings, curved walls, timber floors, large paned windows and several open fireplaces with ornate fire surrounds, as well as beautiful gardens, understood to be originally designed by revered garden designers Claude and Isobel Crowe of Berrima Bridge Nursery.
Knight Frank’s Deborah Cullen told WILLIAMS MEDIA that the coronavirus lockdown has led many of her clients to re-evaluate their way of life and in particular how they spend their family holidays.
As soon as private inspections were possible her team decided to do something special to highlight the intimacy of country living - inviting the purchasers, a family from Sydney’s North Shore, to visit as a family unit for the day.
“In working with CHG who have an onsite caretaker, we organized for the lawns to be mowed, fresh flowers, candles, the underfloor heating to be on, the fireplaces laid so they were all ready to be lit on arrival,” Deborah told WILLIAMS MEDIA.
“The family arrived excitedly at 7.30am got settled in to a warm and toasty environment and their children sat down to log into their school online programs. At the end of the day they were invited to pick from the orchard and vege garden to take home. They were absolutely bewitched by the whole experience and it sealed the deal.”
“The response I had was that they now realise that their international holidays that they regularly enjoy won’t be possible for the foreseeable future. In having this country estate to easily get to from Sydney, they can spend weekends and school holidays there with their family and friends and have another work from home base too if they wish. They may even continue the CHG luxury holiday letting once they’ve settled in,” Deborah told WILLIAMS MEDIA.
“Most of our clients managed to get to their family country home or beach home before lock down. If you didn’t have one, now is the time to start looking and assessing. Some clients are actually considering a total tree change and having an apartment or small home in the city.”

Regions such as the Southern Highlands, South Coast and North Coasts are approaching capacity, Contemporary Hotels Group CEO Matt Fleming told WILLIAMS MEDIA. “At Contemporary Hotels we’ve seen an explosion of demand for holiday homes since restrictions have eased. Given International travel is on hold for the foreseeable future this trend will likely continue to 2021 and many Australians will be visiting areas that they’ve never seen before, which is fantastic. It is a great time to own a home if you are open to sharing in the rewards that come with high-end luxury holiday letting.”
