Tom is Associate Director of Retail Sales and Leasing and Project Marketing and Development Sites at Doran Commercial in Sydney, a firm started by his father Rick.
How did you get your start in the real estate business?
I went for a job at video store and got knocked back. Think my dad felt sorry for me and gave me a job as an Assistant Property Manager. Best part of the story is I ended up selling a multimillion dollar property to video store owner 10 years later.
What do you love about your job?
I love dealing with a vast and exciting array of people that we come across in Commercial Property. These people are normally highly successful in their chosen field and have some amazing stories. I also really enjoy the marketing component of real estate, because we are boutique we are able to push the boundaries. We once ran a campaign calling myself the “The Retail Prince” it had a huge response and people still mention it 2 years on.
What would you say are the biggest issues facing the Australian real estate industry at the moment?
Moving forward it will be any potential legislation that affect the influx of overseas money. Right now developers are seeing some amazing results for residential off the plan sales. Some of which are being exclusivity marketed in Asia. I went to Hong Kong in January to visiting existing clients and make new connections, unless the government makes changes I don’t see the thirst for Australian property to stop. Particular now that some of these Asian investors have seen their existing investments rise upwards of 15-20% in 18-24 months.
What’s your career advice to a young person interested in real estate?
For me it would be to get a really good grounding in the industry as a property manager or sales assistant before going it alone as a sales agent. Along with ensuring you have the finances for a couple of lean years when you start off. There are great rewards for longevity in this game but you have to make it there.
What was your first home?
3 bedroom house in East Chatswood.
Where do you live now?
Kirribilli.
If money were no object, what would your dream property be?
We sold down the retail component of a Australand & Rebel Property Group development called “North” at 118 Alfred Street Milsons Point. We would on occasion have our meeting in the penthouses which has drop dead gorgeous harbours views and generous outdoor components. Hence the seed was planted that I would end up in one of those penthouses one day.
