Are Albanese and Chalmers planning tax on unrealised capital gains for superannuation and changes to negative gearing ?
On 17 April Angus Taylor Shadow Treasurer, Member for Hume released the following statement.
Last night the Prime Minister lied down the camera on a national televised debate about negative gearing and capital gains tax.
In a debate on the ABC on 17 April 2025 the Prime Minister was asked about whether the government modelled changes to negative gearing.
In response the Prime Minister contradicted previous statements by the Treasurer stating “it certainly wasn’t commissioned by us to do so”.
On 25 September 2024 The Age reported “the Albanese government has asked Treasury for expert advice on possible changes” to negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions.
Hours later the Prime Minister was on ABC Radio Sydney where he claimed he had no knowledge of the request stating "I don't know because I'm not the treasurer."
The ABC reported on 27 September 2024 that “Treasurer Jim Chalmers concedes he asked Treasury for negative gearing modelling.”
Since then the Coalition has asked a number of questions at Senate Estimates to clarify what was requested and by whom and when.
Treasury officials have consistently obfuscated and failed to provide direct answers about the nature of this advice.
As Australians head to the ballot box in 16 days time it is critically important they know whether the Treasurer or the government requested a costing or modelling on changes to negative gearing and/or capital gains tax from the Treasury.
Transparency on this matter is also of the utmost importance to ensure the public maintain trust in the independence of the Treasury.
This issue has now become a central issue in the election campaign where Australians are looking for transparency from the Prime Minister, the Treasurer and the Treasury.
1. The Treasurer must allow the Treasury Secretary to release this advice.
2. The Treasurer must specify what and when he requested the Treasury Secretary to analyse negative gearing.
3. The Treasurer and Prime Minister must rule out any changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax in the next term of parliament.
The Coalition will not raise taxes on housing that will just increase rents and reduce housing supply.
Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor said the government must immediately come clean its secret plans.
“The Prime Minister last night denied his government had modelled negative gearing changes. The Treasurer confirmed in September it had.
“The Prime Minister lied to the Australian public on camera about his hidden plans to raise taxes on housing.
“If Labor has nothing to hide, it should release this modelling and allow Treasury to provide a full briefing to the Opposition on the detail, timing, and nature of these requests.
“Labor has broken every promise on tax it made at the last election. Australians are right to be concerned after the Prime Minister lied to their faces on live television, said Angus Taylor Shadow Treasurer.
