REIWA CEO Cath Hart today welcomed the passing of the Residential Tenancies Amendment Act 2024.
“This has been a long process, with a review first launched in 2019 and the proposed reforms announced in May 2023. The Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill was introduced to Parliament last November and we acknowledge the Government’s efforts to get it passed in a timely manner,” she said.
“The passing of the Act gives tenants, investors and industry certainty and allows us to move forward.
“We particularly appreciate the commitment to provide extra funding for the new streamlined dispute resolution process - something REIWA called for in our Pre-Budget Submission.”
Ms Hart noted, while the Act had been passed, the legislation was not effective yet and for now it was business as usual.
“These reforms will be coming through in stages, with the ban on rent bidding and new provisions for remedy or compensation for retaliatory action set to come into effect next month,” she said.
“There are also many details, such as those regarding modifications that have to be prescribed by Regulations, and REIWA will continue to engage with the Government on these matters.
“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with REIWA’s advocacy on these reforms over the years, including the community who have shared their stories and concerns, and our members.”
