Iconic Recruit's director, Jessica Mayes outlines what an employer needs to look for when hiring through a pandemic.
There is a lot of talk about the current job market having an influx of readily available candidates as a result of COVID-19, and this is very true.
You would think that this is good news for anyone hiring, with such a great selection of candidates available for work right now and many of them willing to take a pay cut to secure employment.
That being said, there are certain things that companies should be thinking about if they are in the process of hiring new staff.
1/ Making sure you are asking the potential candidate what their future intentions are, and if the progression they have in mind is in line with what your company can offer them.
With so many candidates just “looking for a job”, it is important to know whether their intentions are long term or short term so you can make sure this fits in with your needs as an employer.
2/ Make yourself aware of their salary expectation – ask what they have been earning in their previous role.
Many candidates in this current climate, if they have lost their job or had their hours reduced, are willing to consider a pay cut for a new role.
Something you should be thinking about is that once this has all passed, will you be able to offer them an increase to where they were?
If you are not, you may not have them for very long!
3/ Clarify the reason they might have lost their job or had their hours reduced in the first place.
It is devastating seeing the effects COVID-19 has had on so many skilled and qualified people’s jobs.
It is still very important to check employment references to make sure stories line up and that there were not any performance reasons behind the decision.
These are important points to keep in mind when hiring if you are looking for someone long term for your business.
