A beachside community near Perth and a housing development in Rockingham have taken out awards at the 2018 Property Council of Australia/Rider Levett Bucknall Awards.
Alkimos Beach was presented with the EPM Projects Award for Best Master Planned Community, while community housing leader Access Housing took out the GOUGH Recruitment Award for Best Affordable Housing Development for Haven in Rockingham.
Alkimos Beach is a testbed for some of the most innovative environmental and social sustainability projects in Australia, according to Chief Executive of Property Council, Ken Morrison.
“Lendlease and LandCorp achieved Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star – Communities rating for a host of landmark initiatives, including the nation’s first community-level battery storage trial and an interactive program that encourages domestic energy conservation,” Mr Morrison says.
“Lendlease and LandCorp have collaborated with Surf Life Saving WA to deliver beach safety education. They also worked with traditional owners to design a community park and to stage events where locals can learn about the heritage and culture of Indigenous people," he said.
He told WILLIAMS MEDIA Australians can expect to see the same sustainable approach in other developments around the country.
“It's really no surprise that Alkimos Beach’s approach to sustainability is being replicated in other developments around the nation - we can definitely expect to see more sustainable developments popping up in the future, which is wonderful,” he said.
Meanwhile, Haven, in the south-west suburb of Rockingham, delivered affordable accommodation for seniors, families and couples on the social housing waiting list, as well as apartments for sale on the open market.
Comprising 32 properties over two complexes, Haven on the Park Apartment consists of 28 apartments. Haven Mews Townhouse is a group of four townhouses, with three commercial premises offering opportunities for business owners and providing local jobs.
"Haven is an outstanding example of effective collaboration between government, the community sector and the development industry to deliver affordable housing, improve lives and drive positive social outcomes,” says RLB’s Managing Director NSW, Matthew Harris.
