Which suburbs have the best food, fun and hipster vibe?
Quirky coffee houses and off-beat eateries are a sub-culture all of their own these days. These trendy suburbs across Australia scored top of the class for for food and fun with Zomato voters – and maybe a little bit of hipster vibe thrown in there, too.
Sydney
Bondi Beach
Still a tourist haven, Bondi Beach is also earning a name for its organic and alternative food culture. It pops up regularly in Zomato’s 'Most Popular Sydney Restaurants' list – top spots are taken out by Trio, a Mediterranean cafe, and modern Australian dining spot, Brown Sugar.
Surry Hills
Swanky, inner-city Surry Hills is the shining beacon of dining options, particularly in Crown Street, but you won’t be lacking in food choices wherever you are. Gelato Messina on Crown Street is voted Zomato’s third-most popular eatery in all of Sydney. Dessert, anyone?
Melbourne
Fitzroy
Fitzroy’s new personality isn’t really a secret anymore – this place is buzzing with culture and kooky cafes. Zomato fans rave about the cannelloni at T Cavallero & Sons, which also scores best baker and coffee shop points too. All in all, you’ll never lack something to marvel at in Fitzroy.
Carlton
Carlton’s coffee culture delivers some of the best cups of joe in Australia, say Zomato reviewers. Lygon Street is a famous, vibrant dining strip that features everything from hole-in-the-wall doughnut shops to five-star fine dining.
Brisbane
Petrie Terrace
Inner-city and hip to the core, Petrie Terrace has The Barracks, a mega dining and retail centre, and an up-tempo, diverse dining vibe. Top-rated restaurant Scout Cafe is as quirky as it is delicious, and ranks in Brisbane’s Top 10 best cafe’s on Zomato ratings. If you’re a fan of handlebar moustaches, Petrie Terrace tied first-place for ‘most hipster suburb’ by Domain in June 2016.
Kelvin Grove
Big universities in town mean there’s a pretty ‘hip’ demographic at Kelvin Grove. The local markets are packed with street food, and it is well known for making a mean cup of coffee (courtesy of high demand from uni students, presumably). Its top rated restaurant is gourmet fish-and-eatery, Carraway Pier.
Adelaide
City Centre
Hands down, Adelaide CBD comes in as the hottest suburb for lifestyle – and for a capital city, its affordability is pretty good. Gouger Street is packed full of eating options, and according to Zomato, the absolute top places to dine are Andre’s Cucina and Polenta Bar, and Thea Vegetarian Tea Garden.
Norwood
Next on the list is the eastern-fringe suburb Norwood, which is home to stunning character homes, designer shops and cafes. Hitting the top of the Zomato popularity charts are the restaurants located along The Parade, with vibrant cafe Argo taking out top spot.
Perth
Victoria Park
An established suburb close to the CBD, Victoria Park is gentrifying into a stylish, walkable suburb with a thriving cafe culture – Zomato favourite Ants Inya Pantz cafe is testament to that – and an incredibly diverse range of restaurants. Students of nearby Curtin University keep the place young and on-trend.
Northbridge
It’s party time all the time in Northbridge, where Zomato foodies have ranked its eating scene in the Top 10 for WA. A fascinating mix of old and new, Northbridge has plenty of popping night life and a cool urban food culture. Apparently, a taste of the apple strudel at Corica Pastries is an absolute must.
