World Trade Centre shopping centre finally re-opens after September 11 terror attacks.
It has been 15 years since 9/11, but lower Manhattan has finally been rebuilt and the $US1.4 billion Westfield World Trade Centre was officially opened this week.
The shopping centre is destined to become one of the world’s most visited retail hubs, located where 300,000 daily commuters and an additional 15 million global travelers annually are expected to converge by 2017.
Westfield celebrated the opening of the centre with performances by singer John Legend and Leslie Odom Jr., the 2016 Tony Award winner for his starring role as Aaron Burr in the celebrated musical Hamilton. Westfield said that families and individuals who have "a special connection with the World Trade Center site" were invited to be present at the opening, which was attended by Westfield’s Chairman Frank Lowy and co-CEOs Steven and Peter Lowy.
Westfield World Trade Center is home to Apple and Bose in technology; Boss Hugo Boss, H&M, Kate Spade, John Varvatos, L.K. Bennett, Lacoste, and Banana Republic in apparel; Under Armour in the athletic category; Sephora, Caudalie, Kiehl’s, MAC, and Dior Cosmetics in beauty; Cole Haan, Stuart Weitzman, Aldo, and Vince Camuto in footwear; Breitling, London Jewelers, Links of London, and Swatch in jewelry; as well as Disney and Kingkow in the children’s category.
Between 50 and 60 of the center's 113 tenants are already in the space, with the rest set to open their stores before the US holiday season begins with Thanksgiving celebrations at the end of November.
The centre will also house an outpost of Italian food emporium Eataly, the newest of 31 locations worldwide.
"The World Trade Center is a symbol of hope, opportunity, progress, and perseverance," said William Hecht, Westfield’s Chief Operating Officer in the United States. "Westfield is profoundly proud to be a part of this project and to introduce new experiences and energy to Lower Manhattan."
