Roads made from 100 percent recycled plastic will be tested by the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands over the next few years. The prefabricated plastic roads are made from recycled plastic bottles and have been developed by KWS Infra, an arm of the construction firm VolkerWessels. The plastic roads could last three times longer than asphalt roads.
“Plastic offers lots of advantages compared to current road structures, both in the construction and the maintenance of it,” said KWS Infra director Rolf Mars. Requiring very little maintenance, the plastic roads can sustain temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees Celcius up to 80 degrees Celcius and will have a more weather-resistant surface than conventional road surface materials.
