Two Grocon projects recognised for architectural design excellence.
Liberty Place in Sydney and Swanston Square Apartments in Melbourne have been internationally recognised for architectural design excellence. Liberty Place, in the heart of Sydney’s central business district, has been announced as one of the winners of the 2015 Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award, a prize for the most outstanding architecture worldwide.
Liberty Place includes ANZ Tower, retail, dining and pedestrian precincts, and the heritage-listed Legion House. The Legion House refurbishment was the first green heritage refurbishment of its kind, and now sets a benchmark for sustainable refurbishments globally. It was designed by FJMT led by Richard Francis-Jones. Since its completion in 2013, the development has won several awards, including the Office Building of the Year at the 2014 World Architecture Festival in Singapore.
Swanston Square Apartments in Melbourne, with a facade dedicated to Aboriginal artist and civil rights leader William Barak, has also been selected as a finalist as a Best Tall Building Asia and Australasia by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Grocon worked with ARM architects and leading Australian artist Peter Schipperheyn to design the building's facade.
“Liberty Place and Swanston Square Apartments stand today as unique features of some of this country’s well-known skylines. We are delighted that they have been recognised alongside some of the world’s most architecturally significant buildings," said Grocon Chief Executive Officer Carolyn Viney.
