Dr David Anthony of Mantle Health discusses the importance of mental health in these COVID-19 times.
Mental health, just like physical health, is not some fixed state. Our mental health refers to our state of mind and how we think, feel, behave and interact with the world and people around us.
This year has taken its toll on our mental health and more people are seeking help to cope with the extra stress. Balance has been thrown out for everyone and exacerbated by this notion of not knowing when it's going to end.
It’s all too easy to become preoccupied with being a good provider, partner, protector and friend and to put our own wellbeing on the backburner in the process.
We are notorious for putting things off. Whether it’s the niggling knee issues, the sore back, or the eye strain trying to read our screen, it’s not until we can’t get out of bed, are struggling with a round of golf or can’t even read a message on our phone that we even bother to seek professional assistance.
It’s often the same with our mental health - we might find ourselves losing interest in things or feeling isolated, suppressing a sense of dread ahead of another big day at work, trying to distract ourselves from increasing spousal tension, having just ‘one more glass’ hoping it will help us sleep, or just hoping our rapidly beating heart is just due to all the extra coffee we are drinking to get through the day, and God forbid, actual anxiety.
We find a way to stoically crack on, and it’s not until the wheels have fallen of that we do something about it – we kid ourselves that just don’t have the time, might not want to admit we’re fallible, or simply don’t know where to turn.
Our financial health matters, our physical health matters, our relationship health matters, and so does our mental health.
If you are serious about being the best you can be, not just for you, but for those around you, you need to manage what matters and prioritise you.
You can’t pour from an empty cup, and none of us get immunity from the stresses and strains of life.
Importantly, experiencing challenges to your mental health doesn’t mean you are broken; it just means you need the right professional support to get back on track.
Like our physical health, when it comes to our mental health, early help seeking behaviour always equates to better outcomes.
Tackling the ups and downs of life is tough enough, but it’s even tougher when we don’t have the right headspace to help us navigate our way through.
