Leading residential real estate group McGrath Estate Agents has once again firmly planted its stamp on Channel 9’s hit renovation series, The Block.
Last night agents Michael Townsend and Josh Stirling of McGrath St Kilda scored a buoyant $4,256,00 for contestant’s Jimmy and Tam renovated property at 360A New Street, Brighton. A staggering $966,000 over reserve delivered the Brisbanites a series win and as well as a record $1,066,000 in prizemoney, making them the first Block millionaires.
McGrath Founder and Executive Director John McGrath said “We’re absolutely delighted to be involved again with The Block which has gone from strength to strength every year since its inception. And it’s been a pleasure to have represented Jimmy and Tam in winning this year’s auction being the second series’ win for our St Kilda team in just three years. The overall standard of all houses was extraordinary, and we felt Jimmy and Tam produced one of the best renovations in the history of The Block, and were deserved winners.”

Expertly auctioned by McGrath Chief Auctioneer Scott Kennedy-Green, this marked his 7th Block appearance. Kennedy-Green masterfully drew competing bids from registered buyers as he quickly surpassed the reserve and then tipped the $4 million mark for the 50’s Palm Springs inspired 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom home.
Mr Kennedy-Green said “This home had a premier position with two street frontages and rear lane access. It was definitely a superior product across the board with a special renovation and attention to detail that made it a standout.
“Despite the challenges that the Melbourne market has experienced during the recent lockdown, this is a testament that well-presented properties will always have the edge. Selling to the only owner-occupier of the current Block series, the property outclassed its competition,” he concluded.
Jimmy, part of the winning duo was full of praise for their agents, Josh and Michael. “Our agents went above and beyond with innovative marketing ideas and we knew they were on our side from the start. The determination and push by these two agents were outstanding from day one, and we couldn’t be happier.”

Agent Josh Stirling added, “This year has been a challenge for everyone, even for The Block and we were very nervous as to the impact that COVID could have had. But we were very confident that the standard of this year’s houses was the best in the three years we have been involved with The Block and this result shows that quality will always prevail. Jimmy and Tam were passionate about their renovation and our ultimate purchaser fell in love with what they created.”
Agent Michael Townsend said, “The marketing of the properties this year was certainly a challenge with the lockdown and we had to focus on one-on-one buyer inspections. In many ways this helped us totally target buyers and personalise our interaction with them. The competitive bidding at The Block auction clearly demonstrated the confidence in the Melbourne market particularly the Brighton bayside market, for both investors and owner-occupiers.”
Over the years, McGrath Estate Agents has marketed seven properties for The Block Television Series. All auctioned by Scott Kennedy-Green, they have received the top price on four occasions and also won the show three times; the first time with John and Neisha in 2010, who pocketed $305,000 as winners for a 2 bedroom ground floor apartment in Vaucluse Sydney. This was followed by a series win with Hayden and Sara in 2018, who won $645,000 for a 250 square metre in internal space of an apartment in St Kilda Melbourne.
