Homeowners and developers wanting to build medium-density housing should find approvals faster and more straightforward under new processes being introduced by the NSW government.
The NSW government is introducing a new housing code that will make it easier and cheaper to gain approval for medium-density housing developments.
The new code aims to increase the share of new medium-density developments in Sydney, with the current rate sitting at 10 per cent of all new developments.
But the new system will only apply to areas where medium density development is already permitted by the local council.
The new code commences from 6 July 2018, and has been launched in alongside a medium-density design guide.
Most new homes in NSW are currently freestanding houses or apartments, but medium-density housing, such as terrace houses or townhouses, are thought to be a more appealing and affordable option.
