Brisbane will soon be home to Australia's longest and highest zipline, allowing visitors to zoom through the treetops with their friends, and helping to cement Brisbane's position as a global city.
The "megazip", as the zipline is being called, will span 1,400 metres and will have six parallel lines, allowing visitors to travel side by side at up to 65 kilometres per hour through the landscape.
The line will begin at the Mount Coot-tha summit and wind through the forest to the JC Slaughter Falls picnic area in Brisbane's Botanical Gardens in Toowong. A shuttle bus will return riders from the base back up to the start of the ride.
Zipline Australia, which is building the ride, will also build a 300-metre treetop walk above the JC Slaughter Falls. The suspended pedestrian bridge will be the longest in the southern hemisphere.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said one of the benefits of the Mt Coot-tha zipline would be its proximity to the city and the zipline will attract more tourists to Brisbane.
“The Mt Coot-tha zipline will be the most accessible zipline in Australia, providing easy access to Brisbane’s seven million annual tourists,” he said.
“Outdoor adventure tourism is one of the fastest growing tourism segments in the world, providing Brisbane a great opportunity to continue increasing numbers of overseas and domestic visitors to the city.”
The zipline was promised by Lord Mayor Quirk as part of his 2016 reelection campaign. The Brisbane City Council will contribute $1 million to the project, which will also be funded through the public sector.
Construction will begin next year, and the facility is expected to open to the public in 2019.
The Brisbane City Council website says the zipline will "reinforce Mt Coot-tha as the premier destination for ecotourism" and will "solidify Brisbane's global reputation as Australia's New World City".
Lord Mayor Quirk's website said with the final route will be refined to minimise impacts on the environment.
