The Economist has rated Melbourne as the world's most liveable city for an incredible seventh year in a row - while Sydney remains in 11th position.
The Economist has named Melbourne the World’s Most Liveable City for an incredible seventh year in a row.
The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Liveability Index ranks 140 of the world’s best cities every year against five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Each factor is given a rating of acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable, or intolerable. For some indicators, a rating is awarded by The Economist's own analysts and contributors.
Melbourne achieved perfect scores for healthcare, education and infrastructure, propelling the Victorian capital into top spot yet again.
REIV CEO Gil King told SCHWARTZWILLIAMS, “Melbourne continues to be the world’s most liveable city, offering inhabitants quality amenities, infrastructure and lifestyle.
“While our weather can be temperamental, Melbourne is a cosmopolitan and diverse city with first class education, healthcare and services.”
Adelaide was placed equal fifth with Calgary, and Perth was ranked seventh.
In other positive news, the survey also found that global liveability improved for the first time in a decade.
But on the down side, Sydney failed to make the top ten, coming in at 11th place for the second year in a row. The Economist reported terror concerns held Sydney's overall liveability ranking back.
Premier Daniel Andrews was in a self-congratulatory mood following the announcement.
“This is a win for all Victorians, who contribute so much to making Melbourne the best place to live in the world," he said.
“We’ll continue working hard every day to make Melbourne even better, and create a fairer, safer and stronger state for all Victorians.”
Victoria's Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren, said, “Every Melburnian knows that they're living in the world's greatest city – and this proves it yet again.”
