What can you buy around the country for the $797,000 median price of a Sydney apartment?
In Hobart, you can buy a five-bedroom house close to the city and with water views for around the same price as a one-bedroom apartment in inner-city Sydney.

With the median price for a Sydney apartment sitting at a record high of $797,000, we take a look around the country, and see how far that amount will go in the nation's other capital cities.
To make the comparison the fair, we chose only properties within five kilometres of each city's CBD.
Sydney: one-bedroom apartment, Surry Hills, $790,000
This one-bedroom apartment at 5.39/517 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills, sold for $790,000 on 6 June 2017, through BresicWhitney.
Location: Surry Hills is only a couple of kilometres from the Sydney CBD, and famous for its vibrant restaurant and cafe scene, cool shops, and village atmosphere.
Land size: 52sqm.
Per square metre: $15,000.

Melbourne: three-bedroom apartment, Southbank, $790,000
This three-bedroom apartment at 3/112 Southbank Boulevarde, Southbank, sold for $790,000 on 10 June 2017.
Location: Southbank is only one kilometre south of Melbourne's CBD. Close to the Yarra River and bustling St Kilda Road, Southbank has been transformed in recent decades from being an industrial wasteland into a densely populated hub. The suburb is now one of Melbourne's main business centres and entertainment locations, with a casino, restaurants, and shops.
