New Victorian legislation identifies the Yarra River and the land it flows through as one living, integrated entity, the first time in Australia such a declaration has been made.
The Victorian government has introduced new laws to protect the state's "cherished" Yarra River.
Minister for Planning Richard Wynne joined Wurundjeri elders in Victorian Parliament to introduce the Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung murron) Bill 2017.
The Yarra River is a significant and much-loved part of Victoria’s history, and the new laws are intended to protect the river for future generations.
The Minister for Planning Richard Wynne said, “This is all about celebrating the rich history of the Yarra River and safeguarding its future for many generations to come.”
In an Australian first, the Bill identifies the Yarra River and the many hundreds of parcels of public land it flows through as one living, integrated natural entity for protection and improvement.
The Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung murron) Bill combines the ‘Caring for Country’ wisdom of traditional owners with cutting-edge river management expertise.
The Minister for Indigenous Affairs Natalie Hutchins said, “The Traditional Owners have been the protector of the river for thousands of years. For it to be protected in legislation is a real testament to their connection to land, water and the Woi-wurrung language.”
For the first time in Victoria, the Bill is co-titled, and part of its preamble is written in the traditional Woi-wurrung language.
The Bill will strengthen and protect the Yarra River by:
The Labor Government has already introduced planning controls to protect the River from inappropriate development along its banks, with tougher rules for overshadowing, and introducing mandatory height limits and minimum setbacks from the river’s edge.
Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said, “The iconic Yarra River is a vital part of Victoria’s environment, so it’s crucial we give it the care it deserves. The Yarra belongs to all Victorians, and this Bill ensures everyone has their voices heard.”
