Architect Madeleine Blanchfield has won the inaugural My Ideal House competition, with a house that will cost $280,000.
Madeleine Blanchfield was announced the winner of the The My Ideal House competition last week, with a design that represents a new way of Australian living, where homes work with nature, making the most of their site and using natural materials.
The My Ideal House competition is the concept of Australian House & Garden magazine and developers, Mirvac. This is the competition's first year.
Blanchfield's design features modular pavilions connected to the landscape. The homes are designed for maximum natural light and privacy, and use simple forms and simple materials, including weatherboard and timber. The cost to build with home with be $900-$1,100 per square metre.
She particularly aims to make the most of northern sunlight. Blanchfield said, "The living pavilion can be rotated around the site, depending on its orientation."
The design also allows new owners to add a personal touch.
"Window boxes made of timber plug in in different ways and can be made of different materials. That allows one simple design to be rolled out in different ways and personalised," said Blanchfield.
The design will now be rolled out at Miravac's Camden project, Crest, in Sydney's south west.
Blanchfield, who has her own architecture studio, won $25,000 for the design.
