A weekend writing-and-editing workshop has helped boost the number of Australian women architects on Wikipedia from 10 to 65.
The number of Australian women architects on Wikipedia has increased from 10 to 65 since March this year, thanks to the work of global collaborators, WikiD, and a weekend writing-and-editing workshop held in Melbourne.
WikiD is a collaboration between Architexx in New York, Parlour in Australia, and n-ails from Berlin, aimed at highlighting the poor representation of women architects on Wikipedia, and providing a network for change.
In October alone, the number of women in architecture on Wikipedia increased by 38%.
Justine Clark runs the program for Parlour, which hosted the weekend workshop. "This is a very generous thing to do," she said. "Many people have given up their weekend or evening to work together to increase the visibility of women in architecture, both historic and contemporary."
An example of WikiD's work is the inclusion of Marion Mahony Griffin on Wikipedia. Where a number of projects were originally credited on Wikipedia to Walter Burley Griffin alone, WikiD, where appropriate, has edited the entry to include his collaborator.
A number of WikiD writing and editing events are planned for next year, in cities all over the world.
