Like a private getaway, this modern beach house feels like it is floating on the water. For sale by Peter Robinson of LJ Hooker Palm Beach.
Positioned above the water's edge on the idyllic shoreline of Great Mackerel Beach, Hart House delivers the illusion from inside that the house is floating directly on the water, with stunning nor nor east views to Lion Island, Barrenjoey Headland and the iconic Palm Beach coastline.
Multi award-winning architects Casey Brown Architecture have designed a modern update of the classic Australian beach shack, with a form derived from a wrapped ‘box’. A corrugated aluminium shell protects the home from the environment and winter southerlies while embracing the views and year-round sunshine. Only one side of the box is left fully open – facing towards the sun and the view, allowing the dwelling to embrace the beachfront location.
Rob Brown of Casey Brown Architecture told WILLIAMS MEDIA that the colour palette used for the house resonates with the beach and surrounding landscape.
“A place for relaxing and enjoying the beach, this distinctive house captures the view, sun and breezes to create an unforgettable shack highly suited to the unique opportunities and constraints of the site,” Brown told WILLIAMS MEDIA. “While modest in size, the interior is rich in materiality – the philosophy of ‘less, but better quality’. The tactile quality of the materials used resonated with the artistic bent of the owners of the house; one of whom is a ceramicist.”
One of only a handful of homes able to be accessed directly by private boat, you can pull your craft onto the beach below. Regular ferry service from Palm Beach to Mackerel ferry wharf provides ease of transport for guests.
Sandstone taken from the site anchors the house, linking the dwelling with the series of terraced retaining walls which cascade down the site towards the beach.
The property is largely self-sufficient – the roof houses a significant array of solar panels for energy, rainwater is harvested for the occupant’s needs, and waste is processed on-site.
Inside, the home feels generous and open, with a double height dining, kitchen and living room showcasing the views of ocean and sky. The kitchen is sleek, modern and functional, featuring stainless steel benchtops, concrete island and a large pantry. A complementary sandstone barbeque area is accessed via side door to the downstairs terrace.
There are three bedrooms to choose from, each offering something a little different. The master bedroom is located downstairs, opening to a vast sandstone terrace, and enjoying generous robes and an ensuite with polished render walls. The second bedroom enjoys direct water views and has a dining terrace just outside, while an upstairs open loft is a fanciful third bedroom.
