More than 50 women from real estate and associated industries gathered at the Sydney Opera House last week for the second REINSW Women on Board Breakfast.
The contribution of women on various industry boards was put in the spotlight last week at the Sydney Opera House as part of the second annual REINSW Women on Board Breakfast.
The event, which was hosted by REINSW’s President Leanne Pilkington, attracted more than 50 women from the real estate and associated industries.
Guest speakers included Executive Chair of Women on Boards Australia, Ruth Medd, who explained to the audience that Industry associations such as REINSW were a very good place to start a board career.
From there, she outlined the importance of creating a quality resume, a board-ready LinkedIn profile and perfecting a convincing 30-second pitch.
The breakfast also featured a panel discussion, with industry professionals Sandra McCullagh, Pauline Vamos, Amanda Rose and Sarah Bester taking to the stage to share their journeys of how they became board members, as well as the best way to go about joining a board in an industry that you’re passionate about.
Other topics of interest covered by the paned included the need for prospective board members to create their own personal support team and how crucial it is in finding success, locating the right recruiters, and finding mentors who offer guidance and even a sponsor on your desired board.

Ms Rose said it was vital for women to support one another and work together in pursuit of board positions.
“I believe that pathways are open and have always been open, but we didn’t realise it,” she said.
“If we work together and connect to each other and sponsor each other into roles there will be a lot more women on boards, even 12 months from today."
The women in attendance could soon be part of the REINSW Board of Directors for the 2019-2021 terms, with elections to be held for the positions later in the year.
Ms Pilkington said there had so far been a lot of enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming ballot.
"I think a better understanding of what prospective board members need to do to actually achieve a place on the board is something I’m really excited to see,” she said.
