Bellevarde Constructions from New South Wales has taken out Australian Home of the Year at the HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards on Saturday.
A gravity-defying structure on the coastal farmland of Gerringong in New South Wales has been named Australian Home of the Year at the 2019 HIA-CSR Australian Housing awards held on Saturday night.
Designed by Atelier Andy Carson and built by Bellevarde Constructions, Headland House features a sharp angular facade clad twice in stone and zinc, and cantilevered to create a gravity-defying illusion.
The project, which also won HIA Australian Custom Built Home, makes the most of the magical views over the Pacific Ocean with 500kg glass panels in the ‘storm-viewing room’.
Andy Carson, of Atelier Andy Carson, told WILLIAMS MEDIA the location of the site was the catalyst for its distinct design features.
"The home is a reaction to the surrounding landscape," he said.
"It's almost like a telescope towards the coastline on one side and farmland on the other.
"For it to win these awards is very exciting."
Other winners on the night included Queensland's Aria Property Group took out HIA Australian Apartment Complex and HIA Australian Outdoor Project for its riverside Oxley & Stirling development.

The apartment building was applauded for luxe communal living including a theatre room, library and dining space with chef for hire. The rooftop outdoor space offers something for everyone, with private dining, poolside lounges or bean bags for more casual get-togethers.
Tasmania’s Lane Group won HIA Australian Bathroom of the Year for a bathroom that extends beyond the usual boundaries of amenity spaces and incorporates an outdoor bath nestled among the wooded landscape.
This year’s award winners were unveiled before hundreds of industry leaders at the prestigious awards ceremony held as the final night of the HIA 2019 National Conference in Perth.
Winners are selected from state-based finalists, with awards in 22 separate categories including Professional Builders, display home, apprentice, bathrooms and kitchens (see full list below).
HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe said the awards were designed to recognise the best in Australia’s residential building industry.
“HIA is committed to recognising our members who excel in building exceptional homes, kitchens and bathrooms," he said.
"These members are reaching the highest standards in workmanship, are innovative, and pushing the boundaries with design.”
“We also recognise the professional builders and business partners who are ahead of the game in customer service and business practices.”
“All winners and finalists are congratulated for being recognised before their industry peers."
